This project was commissioned by a young couple who wished for a house that provided a relaxed environment and peaceful refuge for their growing family. Conceived as an open plan of outward looking spaces, the interiors of the house are designed to playfully interact and transform. Opaque partitions can be folded away or slide open to knit together spaces and create alternatives paths of circulation. Large expanses of glazing retract into walls, allowing the inside and outside areas to seamlessly unite. A carefully modulated exterior perimeter of narrow gardens, shaded patios, and circuitous walkways define the extents of the multiple levels of the house. These perimeter spaces imbue the house with a sense of continuity between inside and outside, while simultaneously obscuring the sight lines of the neighboring residences and street. The result is a multi level dwelling that welcomes the outside in, while maintaining a welcome sense of enclosure and inner serenity.
