Al-Halul Nature Reserve

Forming part of the Kuwait Pavillion at the 2016 Venice Bienalle, this project explores a hypothetical role for petroleum infrastructure in the development of a sustainable post fossil fuel economy. To this end, we have imagined the island of Al Halul in a future tense, being transformed from a storage and loading zone for oil collected from the surrounding offshore fields into a nature conservatory, wildlife refuge, and biological tourism center. The project proposes a radical re purposing of industrial infrastructure as a means of facilitating the return of the island to its rich biodiversity.
